“Why is talking about sex so hard?” asks Lina Bembe while speaking at TEDxStuttgart.
“I’m a Latinx sex professional. Everything I do is related to sex: I started as a porn performer and from there I moved into other related fields, such as directing my own films and writing about sex,” shares Lina Bembe. Bembe is an adult film actress, author, advocate, and a driving force behind SexSchoolHub, an educational platform intent on bringing much needed conversations, information, and uncensored visual examples about sexuality to adults.
Despite the increasing censorship of sexual materials and discussion on social media platforms and the decreasing number of financial and tech companies who will work with creators of sexually explicit materials, the efforts towards sex education are necessary. Topics on bodily autonomy and consent are important and worthy of discussion, now more than ever.
Expressing concern over censorship that has stifled Sex School’s ability to launch and promote their work, Bembe addresses the need to continue to fight against censorship of adult content: “I think that it’s still really important to keep pushing for having sex and sexuality as serious topics because these will eventually help us to hold spaces in which we can all communicate clearly with honesty and we mutual respect both with others but also with ourselves.”
The inherent value of a shame-free culture to talk about sex is one that has broad-reaching social impact, as well as personal benefits. “What motivates me the most are the possibilities of demolishing the massive amounts of shame and stigma our societies attach to everything related to sex; and more importantly the positive changes and growth that happens when we give ourselves the opportunity to question how relate to ourselves and other through sex.”
The video for Bembe’s talk was posted to the TEDx Youtube Channel and currently has over 113,000 views. We hope to see more from SexSchoolHub, as they further their mission to provide shame-free quality videos for sex education.
