Confessions of a Male Groupie

BIJOU Gay Classics

58 min. Directed by Tom DeSimone
Description:

Subtitled "How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Electric Banana," this early Tom DeSimone film gives a gay porn twist to the rock-and-roll culture of the 1970s!

Larry Danser's travails as a male groupie are the focus, which begin after he runs away to Hollywood from his small town and meets party girl Sweet Lady Mary, who has all the connections. At times this film is both shocking and radical, with its wild parties and celebration of pleasure for pleasure's sake, though it ultimately takes a sharp turn and winds up as a cautionary tale. A testament to a world that can never exist again, the film's focus is only minimally on the sex scenes (though it features excellent, stylized solos from both Larry and Sweet Lady Mary), but the sex is hardly the point here; capturing the freewheeling abandon of post-hippie culture in early '70s Hollywood is, which is accomplished, notably, with the incorporation of DeSimone's real-life friends and community in its climactic, sprawling party scene.
