How to Create an .SRT Closed Captioning File

Our platform encourages filmmakers to create closed captions. Being able to create captions is a valuable asset, as almost all festivals and platforms request them, because captions help films reach a broader audience and make the film accessible for viewers who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing. In this article, we explain why SRT closed caption files are worth making, and how you can create the file yourself.

The Basics

What is is the difference between Captions vs Subtitles?
Captions are for viewers who cannot hear the audio, while subtitles are designed for viewers who can hear the audio, but do not understand the language being spoken.

While many people interchange the two words, here we will use the word captions. And in our case, closed captions.

What are Closed Captions vs Open Captions?
Open captions are always displayed on screen and cannot be turned off, whereas closed captions are able to be turned on and off by the viewer.

What is an SRT?
SubRip Subtitle files (SRT) are simple, plain-text files that contain subtitle information. They include start and stop times so the text is displayed on the screen exactly when the audio occurs.

What does the text look like?
Take Camera and I as an example.
Here is the .srt file: CameraAndI_English_EN

The Benefits

Can’t I just burn subtitles into my film?
It’s more beneficial to have SRT files for a few reasons. First, SRTs can easily be converted for video players that allow audiences to change the font, such as making it larger or a more visible color. It allows the captions to be toggled on or off. It also allows multiple language options. If there is a typo, it is easy to correct. You can always burn your SRT file into an export of your film, but you cannot ‘undo’ a video file when the text is ‘baked into’ the final film.

The Options

Can I pay someone to do it for me?
Yes, there are a many companies and individuals who offer captioning. We recommend LingoSpell, who are adult-friendly and can also create captions translated in other languages.

Are there programs that will do it for me?
There are programs available that automate captions using AI software, however it is recommended that you review and correct the files so that the text is accurate. If you edit using Adobe Premiere, captions are included in the toolset.

If I can’t afford a service or program, can I do it myself?
Yes! Once you know how to make captions yourself, you’ll have a valuable skill to be able to offer to others, or use for your future films. And while it can be done with something as simple as a txt file, there are many free or affordable websites to chose from.

Getting Started

How do I choose?
Consider whether you want to pay a professional, use a service, or do it by hand. What you’re willing to spend on cost, time, and effort learning a new skill all come into play. Research online. Here are some searches to get you going, although you may want to refine the search based on your own needs:

“Professional Closed Captioning”
“Closed Captioning Software”
“How to Make SRT files”

One more question! Is there anything I should know about captioning “adult films” specifically?
Adult films are like any other films, except there can be a lot of explicit on-screen sex. For this reason, there are a few things to consider when you seek captions.

  1. Some captioning companies may decline pornographic films.
It’s important to let them know if the film contains explicit sexuality before sending them your film.
  2. Some captioning services may also prohibit adult films.
Check the Terms of Service link found at the footer of each website, and if ever in doubt, contact their customer service.
  3. Sex can be non-verbal.
Include descriptions of sounds that carry the tone of the scene. Rather than captioning “Ah, ah, ah, ah…” or “Ah x 40″… a few well-placed “[moans in delight]” can convey more meaning. Also, be mindful that too many captions can obscure the visual elements on the screen.

There aren’t many guidelines when it comes to captioning sex, so use your best judgement to create a caption that highlights and complements the most meaningful aspects of your film. Click around, explore your options, and welcome to the world of captions!
