THE SAD GIRLS of the Mountains (Die traurigen Mädchen aus den Bergen) is a subversive mockumentary by Berlin filmmakers Candy Flip and Theo Meow.
In the film, a clan of four young girls has retreated to a hut in the distant mountains to turn their backs on the world. They celebrate their own sadness as an act of resistance against patriarchy and finance their isolated existence through homemade pornography which they sell online. Excess money is donated to support Kurdish female militias in purchasing weapons. Just when everything seems to be going fine, the arrival of two gonzo reporters threatens to upset the fragile balance of this feminist micro-utopia.
The film released last fall in a festival run complete with staged ‘protests’ against the film’s premiere and a real-world existence of a Sad Girls’ clip store.
The feature documentary is now available on PinkLabel.tv. We highlight the film’s debut on our platform with an exclusive interview:
PLTV: How has the documentary been received?
What a joy to finally show the film to the public! During three long years of independent production and doing sex work to make money for the budget we sometimes doubted we could reach this point. But we were more than compensated by the lovely reactions of our audiences during festival and cinema screenings across Europe. We even won the Best narrative feature award of the Pornfilmfestival Berlin which means so much to us! We had several more festival and theater screenings booked when COVID-19 came and everything was cancelled. So we are glad that at least people can watch the film online now!
PLTV: What does it mean for you to have it on PinkLabel.TV?
We’ve been working with PinkLabel.TV before, it is one of our favorite hosting platforms! They make it so easy and comfortable for independent filmmakers like us to offer their work to a broad audience.
PLTV: How are the sad girls coping with COVID-19?
The Sad Girls as we know them are not too sad that all their screenings have been cancelled because public events are often stressful for depressed and socially anxious people like them. During lock-down they sometimes feel a strange relief, as if the corset of societal requirements was loosened for a bit. But then they remember that too many people still have to work under even worse conditions and that the crisis hits those hardest who have been marginalized before – which makes them cry again…
Luckily they have some more positive friends who even during lock-down can’t keep their hands still. They made a short film about Sex in Times of Corona which is raising funds for sex workers without access to governmental aids during the crisis!
[editor’s note: at the time this article was published, the fundraiser has reportedly exceeded 5,000 Euros in donations!]
PLTV: Anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
“The Sad Girls of the Mountains” is not your usual porn film. Be prepared for hysterical cuties who love grrrrlsplaining even more than fucking.
Thanks for your time and congrats on the film’s success! Here’s a peek at the trailer. Watch the full film on PinkLabel.tv.
