There isn’t a single video on PinkLabel.tv that was not in some way influenced or affected by the work of filmmaker Candida Royalle, one of the most recognized forerunners of female pornographers — and the subject of an incredible documentary seeking funding through Kickstarter.
Candida’s career began with her entry into adult films in San Francisco in 1974. Ten years later, she started to produce her own (highly successful) line of erotic videos, inspiring a movement of female directors passionate about telling their own stories of desire.
She was a founding member of Club 90 (named after Annie Sprinkle’s NY apartment), considered the first feminist-identified porn meeting groups in 1983. Candida participated in debates with “anti-porn feminists” and was active in politics, for example speaking against California’s “sin tax” bill in the ’90s. She was also the first director of the Free Speech Coalition. Candida’s extensive biography doesn’t stop there; however, and while there’s much more to her story, it’s what hasn’t been told that is the current focus of Candida’s next project.
UPDATE: WHILE YOU WERE GONE: The Untold Story of Candida Royalle, a documentary by Sheona McDonald, portrays the life of Candida Royalle in a remarkable way. It has recently been released under the new title: CANDICE, and is now streaming on PinkLabel.TV!
